Chapter Eight

RAFE

I winced as soon as I made the demand, half expecting Ogun or Iriria to refuse to help. And then what would we do? While I’d traveled to this realm plenty of times throughout my long life, I had only the vaguest idea of where to go to try to find Justice.

Well, I knew one specific place, and I hoped like hell she wasn’t there.

“Would your enemy have taken her?” Malcolm said to his mother, voicing my deepest fear.

Iriria pondered that for a moment, first swiftly glancing at Ogun and then me before furrowing her brow. “It is possible,” she finally said, and I bit back a groan.

“You don’t look so good, Rafe,” Malcolm remarked, still clinging to that same snarky attitude he’d had since attacking me in the hall in the Ivory Tower.

Fucking prick.

Problem was, he had every right to be pissed with me, and I had no right to be upset with him. I rubbed my bruised jaw. I hadn’t planned to defend myself, figuring he just needed to get it out of his system, but goddamn it, that had been a hell of a jab, and I’d impulsively punched him back.

I was beginning to wonder if he’d ever forgive me.

Honestly, I wasn’t worth forgiving.

I pinched the bridge of my nose, gritting out, “I’m fine.” And then I glanced at Iriria, the only other person in the room who had any inkling of what was really going on. “Could you summon a portal? I’ll go to see if I can figure out where she is.”

Ajax grabbed my shoulder and pulled me closer to him. “No. We go together or not at all.”

“What do you know?” Malcolm demanded. “How do you know where to look for Justice?”

“I don’t. Not for certain, anyway.” He wasn’t going to like it when he found out where I thought she was being held.

“This is not a good idea,” Iriria said. “Not without your full stores of magic.”

I spread my arms wide. “Yeah, well, we can’t exactly get to our magic, now, can we?” I had no right to be snippy with her. For one thing, she was the fucking ruler of this realm, and for another—again—none of this was her fault.

Iriria pursed her lips for a long moment, while I held my breath, waiting for her decision. Finally, she said, “I suggest you check with Lodon before doing anything rash. He may be able to assist.”

“Why don’t you assist?” Malcolm asked his mother.

Iriria shook her head, a trace of sadness in her eyes. “Only if there is a threat made directly against me can I interfere,” she explained.

It was bullshit, but it was the way the gods operated, and we didn’t stand a chance of changing the status quo right now. Not if we wanted to find Justice.

“Fine,” I ground out. “I’ll go find Lodon.”

“We will go find Lodon,” Ajax interjected.

I sighed. Not that I didn’t appreciate the help, but I knew they’d pepper me with questions—well, Malcolm would—and I wasn’t ready to answer them yet.
